It may seem as though spring has just sprung, but teens will be getting out of school in just 2 months. Many summer programs and internships are already sprouting waiting lists. With a tenuous

economy and college costs soaring, many families have been focused on students finding a major before heading off to college. So, here are some ways to make the most of your summer and explore careers in fields that aren’t usually part of your high school curriculum:

College-based Programs

If you have a budget, there are great programs for high school students on college campuses in the summer. Students can dabble in:

• Health Science professions at Dartmouth

If your budget is zero, then network with family friends or local businesses to find informal opportunities. Select one or two fields that interest you and create your own summer career trials. Colleges will respect your initiative and focus. Spend a few weeks:

• Working as a helper in a law office, clothing store or local architectural/engineering firm

• Interning at a local newspaper or magazine
