Band of the Year nominee, Deer Tick
The New England Music Awards have released their list of nominees for the 2014 event, designed to recognize the best musicians in the region. This year, over 100 bands from all six New England states have been nominated in categories ranging from “Band of the Year” to “Indie/Pop Act of the Year.” The list of nominees includes several RI artists.

Deer Tick

Providence, Rhode Island’s own Deer Tick is a frontrunner for “Band of the Year.” The Tick continues to make its presence known on the national scene, earning accolades from fellow musicians, critics, and fans. In 2013, they released the critically acclaimed album, “Negativity,” a nominee for “Album of the Year.” The boys are also nominated for "Song of the Year," with "The Dreams in the Ditch," a standout from “Negativity.”

American Idol

Another local artist up for a major award is American Idol star Erica Van Pelt. The South Kingston singer released her debut album last summer, a pop filled romp titled “My Independence.” Along with Deer Tick’s “Negativity,” the record is a nominee for “Album of the Year.” It’s an upbeat collection of “eclectic pop,” which includes elements of Rock, R&B, and Hip Hop. Van Pelt is also in the running for “Indie/Pop Act of the Year.”

Joe Fletcher + Sugar Ray

Last year’s winner for “Best in State,” Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons are nominated for “Best Americana/Roots Act,” a fitting category for the band. Fletcher recently moved to Nashville, but returns home to RI frequently for gigs, including the recent New Years Eve show at The Met.

Sugar Ray and The Bluetones have been a mainstay in the area for over a decade. Led by the former Roomful of Blues front man and harmonica player Ray Norcia, the band is nominated for “Blues Act of the Year.” It’s fitting praise for a band that has received national recognition as a leading Blues act.

Best in RI

The “Best in State” category features nominees from all six New England states. RI's nominees include a diverse range of artists:Consuelo's Revenge, Santa Mamba,Last One Out, The Low Anthem and Satellites Fall. Each of these bands is well worthy of the honor.
