Don't Miss: Artists for Japan Fundraiser

Japan’s recent disasters may seem far away from Rhode Island, but after last year’s catastrophic flooding, the suffering of the Japanese people should feel close to home. To help these people in their time of need, Johnson and Wales University has partnered up with Roots Café and Haruki Japanese Restaurant for its “Artists for Japan” fundraiser.

The event will have artworks for sale from JWU faculty, students, and alumni, including graffiti art, glasswork, photography, paintings, and sculpture. Most of the photos at the auction are from trips to foreign countries, with many of them being from Japan.

All of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to helping the Japanese victims. JWU covered any necessary costs, Roots Café is hosting the event, and Haruki donated the food. There will also be local pianists providing music throughout the night.

JWU initiative

The event was planned by JWU Professor Michelle Morin and JWU class of 2010 alum Chris Rosario, who put together a similar benefit called “Musicians for Australia” following last winter’s terrible flooding in Australia. After the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, they felt that JWU should do something for those victims as a member of the global community.

“Artists for Japan” is taking place on Friday, April 29 from 6-10 PM at the Roots Café, 276 Westminster St, Providence. The admission/donation price is $10 for students and $20 for non-students, and that includes appetizers. There is also a “Dance for Japan” following the event, at which $1 of every ticket will go towards Japan relief efforts.
