Don't Miss: Walk & Roll Fundraiser for United Cerebral Palsy of RI this Sunday

This weekend, United Cerebral Palsy of Rhode Island takes to the paths and roadways of Providence to raise funds and help locals get to know this excellent local cause a bit better.

Sunday's Walk & Roll 5K event is the first outing by UCPRI, a non-profit organization that supports people with Cerebral Palsy but also with a variety of developmental disabilities, says UCPRI executive director Peter Quattromani. "Instead of a high-priced tournament or gala," he said, "we wanted to have an event that anyone could participate in. And because many of our consumers are in wheelchairs, we wanted to include rolling. And we thought it was a cool name."

UCPRI's mission, which is to enhance the independence, productivity, and full citizenship for individuals with CP and other developmental disabilities such as mental retardation, uses funds to support home-based therapeutic services,

residential and community-based day supports for adults, and adaptive arts programs. "Federal funding for these kinds of programs is insufficient," Quattromani says. "That's what these dollars are for." There are approximately 100,000 Rhode Islanders with disabilities, he says.

The Walk & Roll kicks off from the Roger Williams Park Carousel in Providence with 9am registration; the Walk & Roll begins at 10. Local musician Mark Cutler and his band will be on hand from 11-1. Even if you're not up for the exertion, come on down to get to know the cause and its clients, says Quattromani. "This is the type of event that creates community, and that's what we're about."
