Downtown Art: Windows Worth Watching

Next time you're passing a shop window in downtown Providence, take a closer look.  You may be surprised.

Not only is Providence Art Windows using open commercial windows for fresh creations, but they link thematically throughout downcity.  Over the course of nine different window installations currently up, the viewer goes on an art expedition through themes of light, transition, and transformation.  All while exploring the streets and sites of downtown Providence.

Up until June 11th, the current Providence Art Windows tour begins on Westminster Street with “Rudimentary Channels” by Jason Chakravarty (right), who plays with the shape and the corrugated plastic of U.S. Postal crates. Artist Madolini Maxey rounds out the walking tour with her installation titled, “Treasured Objects”, using charcoal drawings on 4’ x 4’ corrugated cardboard (below).

As director and curator of Providence Art Windows, Rebecca Siemering does a beautiful balancing act; making sure each installation included in the tour is able to stand out on its own while creating a cohesive journey, making the theme of light, transition and transformation evident from beginning to end. Providence Art Windows is one of the many initiatives that is helping revitalize downtown and helping add vibrancy to the city.
