Earth Day Bulb Swap at Pawtucket Farmer's Market

The conservation group Lights Out, Green In has a bright idea for how to celebrate this Earth Day: give out 1,500 energy efficient light bulbs for free. That’s right, the Rhode Island-based group will be setting up a booth at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market this Saturday from 10am-1pm where they will be giving out energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs in exchange for residents' old incandescent bulbs.

If all 1,500 bulbs find a home they will save a total of 675,000 pounds of carbon over the course of their life, which is the rough equivalent of taking 336 cars off the road for a year.  Not to mention the new bulbs will also save their owners at total of $60,000 in energy costs.

Saving money and the environment

“It’s a great opportunity for people to get incandescent bulbs out of their fixtures and off their closet shelves and get a chance to save money and the environment,” said Matthew Martinelli, executive director of Lights Out, Green In.

The volunteer-based group, which operates throughout the East Coast, seeks to curb greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging individuals to make small-scale changes in their lighting habits.  Their programs include getting businesses to turn their lights off between 11am and 1pm, and distributing energy-efficient light bulbs to low-income households.

The table will be located at the Wintertime Farmer's Market, Hope Artiste Village, 1005 Main St, Pawtucket.
