Family Matters: Creative Projects, Cemeteries, & More

Kido Tip 1. Letterboxing. Search for one or make your own.

Letterboxing mixes treasure hunting, art, and navigation while exploring the great outdoors and out-of-the-way places. Find a list of letterboxes and their clues, sorted by location on the letterbox.org Web site. Each "letterbox hunt" will list the level of difficulty along with clues on how to find the letterbox. Once found, visitors stamp the book (hidden in a waterproof container) and/or leave a note as evidence of finding the hidden box.

Last year we created our own letter box, inspired by one of my sons' favorite books, Harry Potter. We recently re-visited the letterbox named "Hagrid's Hut" and were delighted to see all the visitors stamped in the book.

Kido Tip 2. East meets West at The Steel Yard.

The Steel Yard, a West Side urban arts oasis is a place for artists and community projects and programs. If you have been to the Yard recently you may already know what a cool space it is and if you

have been meaning to check it out but never have, now's the time. Bring the kids to the Family Bonfire & BBQ this Saturday, October 16th from 5 to 8pm. Learn more about their courses, events, community work and see the newly-renovated digs. Suggested donation is $10 for adults, kids are free.

Kido Tip 3. Visit a cemetery.

Visiting a historic cemetery is one of Jaci Arnone's family's favorite fall pastimes. With the leaves changing colors and Halloween right around the corner, a cemetery is a fascinating  place for kids to

explore, play games and learn about history. Although the wide open spaces may seem perfect for wild rumpusing or for a game of freeze tag, be sure to remind the kids of proper cemetery etiquette before heading out. Read more about how to explore a local cemetery on Kidoinfo: Local Haunts.
