Family Matters: 3 Cheap Ways to Keep Kids Busy This Weekend

Yucky weather, snowmen made (and wrecked and remade), January wearing on? Here are three great ways to have fun with the kids, with no money out of pocket.

Kido Tip 1. Play library roulette

Library roulette is the cheapest, fastest, smartest way to get your family into a fun, new indoor experience. Head over to your favorite Rhode Island library to see what passes are available for the zoo,

aquarium, and a host of other nearby venues. Library passes allow us to shake up our routines without shaking out our wallets. Fun for free is always a Kido Favorite.

Kido Tip 2. Think spring

Indulge daydreams of Spring at the farmer’s market. It’s time to choose and sign up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) or to begin planning your own delicious garden.

Kido Tip 3. Play with ice inside

If it's too cold to head outdoors with the kiddos or you do not have the energy to bundle them up for the trek outside, make your own ice fun indoors. Plan ahead and make icebergs by filling Tupperware containers with water and freeze. Place frozen blocks in sink or bathtub. Add colored bath drops for an arctic blue water. Pull out the plastic people and toy animals and the kids will have fun playing in their own icy wonderland. Start off or (follow) by reading icy-themed books such as the Little Polar Bear series by Scott Peterson or In Arctic Waters by Laura Crawford.
