Area music this weekend features a few “double-plays,” as area venues rock out for two nights with great local and national artists. Read on for our “5 Live” music musts…
The Boss at Mohegan Sun
The “legendary” Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band arrive at Mohegan Sun this weekend, with shows on Saturday and Sunday as they complete a leg of the High Hopes tour. The band has evolved over the years and currently features the blistering guitar attack of (Rage Against the Machine’s) Tom Morello. Golocal will be there – look for a complete review next week! Jimmy Vaughn at the Knickerbocker Cafe
Meanwhile, just over the border in Westerly, head to the Knickerbocker Cafe tonight for a blues show with Jimmy Vaughn and the Tilt-A-Whirl Band. The master bluesman, who taught his brother Stevie Ray how to play guitar, is joined by powerhouse vocalist Lou Ann Barton. The band promises “Blues, Ballads and Favorites.” Jim Oblong opens - tickets are $40 in advance, $45 at the door, show starts around 8PM.
This weekend also sees the return of the Round Square Music Festival at Theatre 82 in Cranston. A gaggle of folk, rock, blues and jazz musicians will be there. The lineup includes Steve Allain, Kayla Farnham, G.W. Mercure, Tracie Potochnik, and Ian Fitzgerald tonight and Kayla Ringelheim, Daphne Lee Martin, Haunt The House, Allysen Callery and Dan Blakeslee tomorrow night. Tickets are $10 per show or $15 for the weekend. Theatre 82 is located at 82 Rolfe Square in Cranston. Music starts at 8PM both nights.
Americana at Sandywoods
Sandywoods in Tiverton will be rocking this weekend to some of the Boston area’s best Americana bands. Tonight, check out folk-bluegrass quintet Grace Morrison and the RSO, along with The Whiskey Boys. Tomorrow, it's American Beauties with the Rhode Island’s Becky Chase Band. Tickets both nights are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Tonight's show is at 7:30PM, tomorrow night begins at 8PM.
Howie Day at Manchester 65
For another option tomorrow night, head to Manchester 65 for indie rock artist Howie Day. Day, a Maine native, is known for his emotive lyrics and inventive melody. He’s on tour with some old favorites and new song from his soon-to-be-released new album. Christina Holmes and Satellites Fall open at 8PM. Tickets start at $15.
Boston Calling Music Festival is a three-day, two-stage festival featuring some of the biggest and best acts in live music. The event will be one big party with easy access to both stages, food, services and more. All ages are welcome and children under 10 are free.
Presented by the Wormtown Trading Company, the Strange Creek Campout features live music, on-site camping, disc golf, yoga, a holistic village, and the Strangers Helping Strangers Food Drive.

Gathering of the Vibes is an annual music, arts and camping festival now in its 19th year. Vibes has grown into a four-day festival that has featured such world-class talent as Crosby, Stills and Nash; all original members of the Grateful Dead; the Allman Brothers Band; Jane's Addiction; James Brown; the Black Crowes; Buddy Guy; Elvis Costello; George Clinton and P-Funk; Bruce Hornsby; Les Claypool; and many, many more big names, while continuing to showcase extraordinarily talented, young, up-and-coming bands to the 20 thousand people who attend each year.
Folk music has been a presence in Newport since 1959, when the Newport Folk Festival was founded by George Wein. Backed by board members Pete Seeger, Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand, and Albert Grossman, the Festival became renowned for introducing a number of performers who went on to become major stars, most notably Joan Baez (who appeared as an unannounced guest of Bob Gibson in 1959), and Bob Dylan, whose first Newport appearance, as a guest of Joan Baez in 1963, is generally regarded as his premiere national performance.
Established in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival begins its 60th year this August, one week after its sister event, the Newport Folk Festival, takes place. The first event was originally billed as "First Annual American Jazz Festival" and featured many notable jazz musicians, including Billie Holiday.
