Beach Boys in Newport
There was a party atmosphere in Newport Saturday night when the Beach Boys came to the Newport Yachting Center. They opened with “Do It Again,” a song drenched in nostalgia: “Well I've been thinking 'bout, All the places we've surfed and danced and, All the faces we've missed so let's get, Back together and do it again.”
Lead Singer Mike Love
The band played over 40 tunes from their catalog of surf songs, car songs and love songs. “Be True to Your School,” "Surfer Girl," and “I Get Around” were first set highlights. They opened the second set with “California Dreamin’” and later played “God Only Knows,” perhaps the greatest love song ever penned.
Guitarist Scott Totten
Original member Mike Love leads the band which also includes longtime member Bruce Johnson on Keyboards. Guitarist Scott Totten (above) led the band through their catalog soloing on crowd favorites like “Wouldn’t it Be Nice” and the brilliant “Sloop John B.”
Drummer John Cowsill
The classic “California Girls” was a big a sing-a-long, where the hip and stylish east coast girls were front and center. Later, “Barbara Ann” saw a number of younger fans invited on stage, where more than a few shot “selfies” with the band including Newport native John Cowsill (pictured above).
Fans Rock the NYC
With a fan approved 2½ hour set of over 40 songs, and 130 shows a year, “America’s Band” shows no sign of letting up. Their endurance elevates their stature beyond music – the Beach Boys are an American institution … like baseball and apple pie.
RI Singer Joe Silva Opens
Rhode Island singer-songwriter Joe Silva opened for the Beach Boys. A lifelong fan, he shared his thoughts with GoLocal. ”The opportunity to share the bill with the Beach Boys is a most surreal experience for me. I started out playing the drums at the age of 3 and would play along to Beach Boys records. Then, I thought the Beach Boys would be a fun introduction to the world of music for my kids and I played the hippest of their songs while driving to day-care every morning.”
Joe Silva
Silva played several originals from his recent album, Blue, produced by Anton Fig from David Letterman’s band. Songs including “Out of the Rain,” “Walk Away, ” and “The Word Believe.” He also played covers from artists as diverse as Paul Simon, John Denver, and Dave Loggins. Be sure to check him out at an area show sometime soon. Check his website for details.
