James Clayton Sattel's RI Summer: Horses

This week, Jim turns his lens to a subject not always associated with Newport—horses. "Patience is the name of the game when photographing horses," Jim says. "Eighty percent of the time, horses are grazing, and lack of patience can result in a group of horses all with their heads down—no action, no eye contact, nothing to relate to." Jim says that when he photographs horses, "I like to get shots that create a feeling of freedom, the innocence of the horse, and its seemingly limitless energy." Picturesque pasture scenes are great, he says, "especially when there's interesting architecture. Using the pasture and barn structures can create a compelling photo."
