Jay Sweet: 15 Who Made a Difference in 2015

2015 was already a big year for the Newport Folk Festival — the much lauded annual music event was celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan going electric, and landed yet another impressive array of talent for its lineup to wow a now-constantly sold-out crowd.

In December, the Festival was lauded as tops in the nation in 2015 by national music publication Consequence of Sound, who attributed much of the success to Sweet.

“NFF has enjoyed a recent resurgence largely credited to event producer (and newly named Executive Producer of the Newport Festivals Foundation) Jay Sweet," wrote Ben Kaye.  “Newport Folk Festival is unlike anything else. That’s clear enough when you note the 50-year legacy of history-altering performances and the pantheon of artists who have played during those decades, including this year. When you look at what it’s actually accomplished in the context of both its storied past and the current climate, however, it’s clear Newport Folk is doing something no other festival in the country is even capable of.”

Stay tuned for GoLocal's Ken Abrams' interview with Sweet on Thursday, December 24.  Here's a sneak peek of what Sweet told Abrams.

“If I’m guilty of something, it’s the complaint there is too much music. The single biggest complaint of festival-goers is that it’s unfair that (fans) can’t get around to hear all their favorite acts. I’ll gladly accept those barbs," said Sweet.
