Johnny Gill Coming to Park Theatre on Mother’s Day
Still not sure what to do for Mom this Mother’s Day? Why not take her to see R&B sensation Johnny Gill at Cranston’s Park Theatre. Gill, an original member of 80’s boy band New Edition, and one of top touring R&B artists today, will be in town on Sunday, May 11.
The Voice
Gill picked up his nickname “The Voice” soon after joining New Edition in 1987, where his singing raised the bar for the boy band. The only member not to hail from Boston, Gill was born and raised in Washington, DC where he got his start in his father’s church choir.
He was discovered at the age of 17, and soon after releasing his self-titled debut album, was asked to join the groundbreaking boy band. He recorded several top selling albums with the band featuring singles “Can’t you stand the Rain,” and “Boys to Men.”
Gill returned to his solo career in 1990 with the release of his second self-titled album containing the mega-hits, “Rub You the Right Way,” and “My, My, My.” In 1997, Gill collaborated with Keith Sweat and Gerald Levert to form the super group L.S.G., which yielded the multi-platinum album, Levert.Sweat.Gill, and the 2003 follow-up, LSG2.
The buzz surrounding his latest project positioned Gill to once again change the landscape of music. Featuring instant classics like the album’s debut single, “In the Mood,” and collaborations with Wyclef Jean, Trey Songz, and the track, “Been Loving You,” which reunites Gill with L.S.G. group mate Keith Sweat and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Eddie Levert, Still Winning climbed to #4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart.
Gill has also collaborated with music icons including Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, Babyface, and the late, great Rick James. He enters 2014 excited to put the finishing touches on a new album due out later this year, which will be released on Gill’s own label, J Skillz Records.
He is also an actor, making more than 80 television and film appearances. These include a cameo role on Family Matters as well as an appearance singing “You and Me” in Tyler Perry’s hit movie Madea’s Family Reunion.
