Make Some Money While Updating Your Wardrobe

These first few days of fall make for an ideal time evaluate your colder-weather wardrobe, shoes, and accessories, and make some tough decisions on what makes the cut. Truth is, its easy to save pieces for sentimental reasons, hoping it will come back in style, or because it put a serious dent in your wallet, but its hard to be inspired to dress each day if confronted with a crammed closet. By donating pieces beyond their prime or consigning gently used ones that just don’t fit properly or just aren’t being worn, you can help the community and collect some serious cash.

What Goes Around

Before consigning, call local shops including both Second Time Around shops in Providence, Karma Couture, Never Enough and Di Moda on Main in East Greenwich, and One More Time in Wakefield, to just name a few, to first find out if they’re accepting items and if an appointment is required. “We’re looking for pieces from the past two years, really classic pieces, or high-end vintage,” said Jeanne Nicholson, marketing director for Second Time Around. In-season clothing in new or like-new condition sell best, she advised, adding, “Boots, sweaters, and patterned scarves are all really hot right now.” Second Time Around consigners are asked to make an appointment ahead of time, which usually book about a week out, and are paid quarterly or can use their lot as store credit. First-timers can use this helpful Consignment 101 guide by Second Time Around for tips on making the most of your closet cast-offs.
