MUSIC: Volcano Kings Erupt At Firehouse 13

Unique and eclectic music was on tap at Firehouse 13 in Providence this past Friday with local spy-noir groove jazz act Volcano Kings hosting a pretty cool show. Fellow Providencians The Passionate Mammals and and Graph Rabbit from Brooklyn were also on the bill showcasing a variety of styles to create truly eye-opening sounds. If you were in the mood for getting weird, Firehouse 13 was surely your destination to kick off the weekend.

The Passionate Mammals

A quintet that sounds like a mix between The Arcade Fire, The Velvet Underground and The B-52's, The Passionate Mammals started off the show and it was the best I've heard them sound live so far. "Sunset", "Incredulous", "Let Met Out", "Defrag My Heart", "Adderall", "Kraken Killz", "Everybody's" and "Give It Up" had people dancing and at one point guitarist and vocalist Noah Chevalier was doing push ups on stage. The Passionate Mammals will be performing next at Dusk on April 23rd as part of The Artistic Explosion Music festival to benefit music education in Rhode Island, come on down and bask in cool tunes for an awesome cause.

Graph Rabbit

A duo from Brooklyn you can notice having a big ambient Radiohead-esque influence in their style, Graph Rabbit came up next for an intimate performance that had everyone sitting down on the floor. "My Name", "Butterscotch", "White Birds", "Make It Stop", "Falling Snow", "Only Fields" and "Whiteout" created a scene like storytime in kindergarten, but their set was very soothing and relaxing so I can understand why people were in the mood to sit with their legs crossed. Graph Rabbit has their self-titled debut album currently available, and from the experiences of this past week for most of us pick up a copy and ease your mind.

Volcano Kings

An array of noise, clashing rhythms and a bonafide snazzy feel, Volcano Kings concluded the evening with their instrumental jams that sounded like the soundtrack to a cyberpunk James Bond film. "City Machine", "Nightlife", "Saw Mill", "Love Theme From Juarez Death Squad", "Detective", "Space Warp To Zombie Cougar Planet" and "King Kolasa" had people swinging themselves all over the place, these guys have such an awesomely original sound it's contagious. Volcano Kings will also be performing with The Passionate Mammals at Dusk on April 23rd as part of The Artistic Explosion Music festival to benefit music education in Rhode Island, just another reason why this should be the biggest week of music in the history of The Ocean State.
