NEW: Brown Application Fees Among Most Expensive in Nation, Says US News
Brown University, fresh from its #15 national ranking on US News' Best Colleges 2012, also made US News' list of the most expensive application fees in the country, with a $75 application fee that is nearly double the national average of $37.64.
That already sounds like a big chunk of change to get Rhode Island's Ivy League all-star to review your GPA, SATs, ACTs, APs, and how you saved the world while captaining your high school's wrestling team, but that figure adds to an average senior application dossier of 8 colleges. That's a lot of money out the door for families (although it is important to note that many schools will waive the fee for students with financial need, and others offer a waiver to students who apply online.)
Sticker shock
And yet, it isn't the top fee in the country. That honor goes to George Mason University, in Virginia, which charges $100 for its application (but is only ranked #138 nationally). In second place, Stanford University at $90 (perhaps worth it to get looked at by US News' #5 national university), then Columbia and Villanova at $80 each. After those big-ticket applications, Brown shares fifth place nationally with 15 other institutions, including Boston University, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, University of Chicago, UPenn, and Yale.
