NEW: East Providence Native Jennifer Lee Wins Oscar for ‘Frozen’

Writer and director Jennifer Lee.
East Providence native Jennifer Lee took home Oscar gold last night as co-director of the Disney animated feature Frozen. Lee, who also wrote the film, shared the award for Best Animated Feature with co-director Chris Buck. The movie also won an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Let it Go,” which was penned by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Lee, who was born and raised in East Providence, is the first ever female to co-direct a feature film for Walt Disney Animation Studios. Additionally she is the first writer—regardless of gender—to transition from writer to director at any major animation studio.

Sunday night’s Oscar win was just the latest in a string of awards for Lee, who also recently won a BAFTA Film Award, an Annie Award, and an Austin Film Critics Award—all for her work on Frozen.

One of the most successful animated films ever; Frozen recently crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, including $388 million domestically.

Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, Frozen tells the tale of a fearless princess who goes on epic journey to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have accidentally trapped her kingdom in eternal winter.

In addition to Frozen, Lee also co-wrote Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature as last year’s Academy Awards.

Lee earned her undergraduate degree in English from the University of New Hampshire and a master’s degree in film from Columbia University School of the Arts.
