"The PWCVB website, GoProvidence.com, also serves as a clearinghouse for affordable holiday hotel packages, as well as the many holiday activities taking place around the city.  Here are some highlights," said the PWCVB.

PWCVB Calendar

December 2:  Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza will light the tree in front of City Hall at 5 p.m.   The lighting is part of the first downtown “Sip & Shop,” which will take place from 4-8 p.m.  Participating local retailers and restaurants are offering specials and discounts.  Those enjoying beverages are invited to take their drinks with them as they shop along Westminster Street from Dorrance to Empire.   An outdoor screening of “It’s A Wonderful Life” will also take place on Grant’s Block beginning at 5:30 p.m.

December 3:  Cruise through the city while enjoying cocoa with Saint Nick himself, as the Providence Riverboat Company hosts “Boat Rides with Santa.” Or stop by his home away from home at Santa’s Village at the Carousel in Roger Williams Park.

Do some extra giving this season by visiting Providence’s Wayland Square, as they kick off their “Season of Giving” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Shop local with a variety of retailers and  delight in carolers, refreshments, and other events.  Visitors are encouraged to donate blood, coats, toys, canned food, and more to benefit those in need. Donations will be accepted throughout December.

That evening, the Alex & Ani Skating Center hosts a tree lighting of Olympic proportions, which will include music by the Providence Gay Men’s Chorus.  Enjoy a figure skating demonstration produced by two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan and starring some of the world’s finest champions including US National Silver Medalist Richard Dornbush, Amiee Buchanan and Heidi Munger. Following the program, public skating will resume at the Rink where patrons can skate alongside the world-champion performers.  (Please note: public skating will be closed from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.)

December 4:  Burn off the eggnog with the Downtown Jingle 5K at 11 a.m. in front of the Rhode Island Convention Center.  (Registration required.) Then, find the perfect gift at the Providence Flea Holiday Market , from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. at Hope High School.  With products from more than 50 local vintage vendors, artisans and makers, there are plenty of options. (Also occurs Dec. 11 and 18.)  Wrap up the family fun with a visit to the Hope Street Holiday Stoll from Noon to 6 p.m.  The neighborhood festival will feature music, children’s activities, “Selfies with Santa” and more.

December 10: Seize a rare opportunity to buy works from both emerging and established artistic talent at the Rhode Island School of Design Alumni & Student Holiday Art Sale, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the RI Convention Center.  The event features more than 200 RISD alumni and current student artists selling work in a variety of media including: fine art, glass, ceramics, apparel and jewelry.

The Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Providence Singers hold their 10th joint performance - Handel’s “Messiah” - in the gorgeous gilded auditorium at the VETS at 7 p.m.

December 16: The magic and splendor of the holiday season has never been richer than in Festival Ballet Providence's elegant production of “The Nutcracker” at the Providence Performing Arts Center (performances through Dec. 18).

Ongoing:  A Rhode Island holiday tradition, Trinity Rep’s annual performance of “A Christmas Carol” puts a new twist on the classic tale every year.  This year’s version of the Dickens holiday mainstay is witty and fast-paced with plenty of holiday sparkle.

Visitors, shoppers and businesses are encouraged to share their Providence experience by joining the ThinkPVD local business campaign on social media using #ThinkPVD.  Some free parking is available, with time limits.  For information, visit: http://providenceri.com/mayor/mayor-elorza-relaunches-thinkpvd-campaign-free .
