Lynn Loveday, State Vice-President, RI Council 94, AFSCME, RI AFL-CIO; Jim Ryczek, Executive Director of RI Coalition for the Homeless; Jean Johnson, Executive Director House of Hope CDC
Rhode Island Council 94 helped to ensure that the state’s homeless population stays warm this holiday season by collecting hundreds of donated clothing items as parts its “Have A Heart” drive, which culminated on Wednesday. In total, Council 94 collected over 200 coats, scarves and hats throughout its month long drive.

The donation drive began prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday and concluded this week. Locations where donations were collected include: the Department of Administration, Department of Health, Pastore Medical Center, Rhode Island College, and the University of Rhode Island.

“While these donations represent only a small step in combatting homelessness, I am proud that state employees helped Rhode Islanders who lack shelter, the most fundamental necessity during winter,” said Lynn Loveday, State Vice President AFSCME RI Council 94.

Background

Loveday’s crusade to help the homeless began after a visit to Harrington Hall, the state’s largest homeless shelter, which routinely houses 88 men per night. After her visit, Loveday was keen on addressing the state’s homeless situation, which seemed to her unacceptable and immoral. Luckily for Loveday, RI Council 94, AFSCME, AFL-CIO backed her call to help those less fortunate.

Helping the Homeless

In addition to the “Have a Heart” Donation Drive, the AFL-CIO voted to support the long-term solutions of ending homelessness as put forth in Opening Doors Rhode Island, the State’s Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness, which was adopted in April 2012 by Governor Lincoln Chafee.

The union is currently urging Governor Chafee and the General Assembly to support funding efforts designed to help the homeless with rental assistance. Specifically, the plan calls for an increase in funding for homeless prevention and assistance and for $3.4 million to be set aside in the State Budget for rental assistance.
