Background

To prepare for the show, the students spent the summer rehearsing six hours a day. Robb Dimmick, served as artistic director, and Michael Palter and Lynne Jackson provided the musical direction. The curriculum included learning songs from the jazz tradition, developing vocal phrasing, acting skills and choreography.

The project, now in its tenth year, is produced by Opera Providence and funded by RISCA and the Providence Shelter for Colored Children. The original production, conceived by Dimmick and written by Palter and Jackson, celebrates the city of Providence's musical diversity and promise of its youth. The songs in the show were written by Jeffrey Osborne, George M. Cohan, Frankie Carle, Sissieretta Jones, among others.
