Newport Art Museum to Honor Famed Architect Richard Morris Hunt

Prominent nineteenth century American architect Richard Morris. Hunt.
The Newport Art Museum has announced it will commemorate the sesquicentennial anniversary of the John N.A. Griswold House by honoring its builder—noted architect and Newport native Richard Morris Hunt. The exhibition, entitled "Very Simple Charm; The Early Life and Work of Richard Morris Hunt in Newport, 1858-1878," opens on Friday, May 30 and concludes on Sunday, Sept. 14.

At the center of the exhibition are 14 original Griswold House drawings on loan from the Library of Congress. Also included are photographs of other early Newport homes, many now razed, as well as artwork by Hunt's brother, William Morris Hunt, and family friend John La Farge. Lectures by noted Hunt scholars are scheduled during the exhibition.

The exhibition, talks, and an accompanying catalog comprise a comprehensive look at the Griswold House and its place in the history of American architecture and the career of Richard Morris Hunt. The Sesquicentennial exhibition is made possible with support from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation, Diane B. Wilsey, Skinner, Inc., the Providence Journal Foundation, the Hamilton Family Foundation, and Edward and Wendy Harvey.
