Newport + Block Island Named Best Yachting Towns

Newport: "The center of sailing"
According to Yachting, Newport is "the undisputed center of sailing in the United States — among other things." Newport is credited for its large and well-protected harbor that's a short distance from the open North Atlantic. "Touring the harbor — best done in a small boat at very low speeds — reveals a staggering variety of yachts," according to Yachting. "If you prefer being awed by superyachts, the Newport Shipyard should be one of the stops. Out in the mooring field, you’re likely to stumble on one or more classic Herreshoffs, an old Huckins or two, and nearly every brand of late-model sailboat and powerboat on the market."
Yachting calls the New York Yacht Club’s Harbor Court an "on-the-water 'club house'" and crows about the great food—recommending the chowder at the Black Pearl, fine seafood at The Mooring, and fried clams at Benjamin's. "The city has more comings and goings by sea than most places have by land," says Yachting. "It’s a great place to visit and an even better place to live."
Block Island: "Beautiful"
So close to mainland Rhode Island as well as Long Island's Montauk Point, Block Island "stands in stark contrast to both of those places," according to Yachting. "Free white sandy beaches are just miles away from towering bluffs and water so clear you’ll want to drink it."
Newport and Block Island are among 50 towns in America honored by the magazine for 2012, and among 12 in New England. Other New England towns cited by the magazine are:
Mystic, CT
Stonington, CT
Marblehead, MA
Edgartown, MA

New Bedford, MA
Newburyport, MA
Camden, ME
