Organizing for Pawtucket: 15 Who Made a Difference in 2015

Paws isn't going to Providence (for now), due to to an effort by Pawtucket residents to stop a taxpayer funded stadium in Providence in 2015.
They were the little group that could — and did — fight to keep the Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium, for now.  Led by Pawtucket resident David Norton, the group was one of a number on social media that cropped up to oppose a taxpayer-subsidized move of the AAA ball club to a new stadium on 195 land in Providence, and worked constantly -- and consistently -- to keep their voice at the forefront.

From petitions to phone calls to rallies, the group put intense and continued pressure on leadership, even after the first proposal by the new ownership group was shot down by Governor Raimondo in April.  Even as the prospects of a new deal appeared dim heading into the summer months, Norton rallied troops to hold signs in Speaker Mattiello’s district on the weekends, showing that they were taking the fight right to his district.

Along with other stakeholders, the group “declared victory” in September when Mattiello announced that negotiations had fallen through.  Much of the focus with the approaching general assembly session is on the prospect of tolls, and it the fate of the Pawtucket Red Sox is still not certain with the new leadership group.
