RISD Fashion Show

It’s that thrilling time of year to see what the RISD’s apparel students have spent all year preparing at the annual RISD Fashion Show.  This Saturday, May 3, will be the final collection critique hosted in the RISD Auditorium starting at 8:30AM.  Then, the final Collection 14 performance will take place on May 10 at the Rhode Island Convention Center.  The main show will happen at 7pm with a preview show at 2pm.

This year’s judging panel consists of world-class fashion icons such as Laird Borelli-Persson, Robert Geller, Neil Gilks, and Nicole Miller.  Also attending the show will be Elle Magazine and the Council Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). 

One of RISD’s new faculty members, Antonio Ciutto, will be running the production for the first time.  The current senior class consists of 30 students, one of the largest the school has seen in years, and each of them will exhibit a short introductory video to preface their six-piece collections.

The show is split by an intermission with sophomore and junior work presented first and the senior exhibit in the end.  The sophomore and junior portion has been organized into four sections: Unconventional Material, Print Project, Junior Knitwear and Junior Tailoring.  This year’s “Print Project” section required students to incorporate a specified print by Nicole Miller – one of the judges – into a unique garment.

Current RISD sophomore and apparel major, Adam Dalton Blake, says,  “this show is such a unique way of viewing all the work that students have been creating throughout the year.  When I saw it my freshman year, I was so inspired I decided to change my major!”  Blake has been selected to contribute his own work in this year’s show.

The schedule for Saturday’s critique will have seniors between 8:30 a.m. - 12:40 p.m, juniors between 1:40 p.m. – 3:25 p.m. and sophomores between 3:25 p.m. – 4:05 p.m. For the performance, photography will only be allowed at the 2 p.m. show.

The Book of Mormon

If you haven’t been yet, make sure not to miss The Book of Mormon at the Providence Performing Arts Center this weekend!  Show times for this weekend include Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and finally Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.  The last show is on May 11; so don’t miss what Ben Brantley of The New York Times calls "The Best Musical of this Century."

The run time for the show is about 2 hours and 30 minutes including an intermission.  Entertainment Weekly says it's "the funniest musical of all time." From South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, it's The Book of Mormon, winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical. Jon Stewart of The Daily Show calls it "a crowning achievement. So good it makes me angry."

Cox Providence Rhode Race

This Sunday May 4th will mark the seventh annual Cox Providence Rhode Race.  Races will include a marathon, half-marathon, 5k, and even a kids’ fun run.  In 2013, the race had 4,000 participants and is now one of the fastest growing and most affordable races in the northeast.

According to the event website, “Cox Providence Rhode Races hosts a 3 day Health and Wellness Expo.  With more than 5,000 participants and 10,000 people including spectators, the expo includes over 2 dozen vendors, yoga sessions and running seminars.”

The Cox Sports Marathon is scheduled to begin at 7:30Am on Sunday in Downtown Providence.  In the same location, the Half Marathon will start at 8:00AM, followed by the 5k at 8:15AM and kids’ race shortly afterward.

You don’t have to be a runner to enjoy the atmosphere of a marathon!  Thousands of spectators line the course and cheer on the Providence runners.  It’s a great environment for people of any age to finish up a weekend!

Springtime Farmers' Market

Don’t miss Pawtucket's Springtime Farmers's Market this Saturday, May 3, which will happen between 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  The event will happen at Hope Artiste Village on 1005 Main St. in Pawtucket, RI.

With more than 62 vendors prepared to sell their spring items, you won’t want to be late!  Georgina Sarpong, the Market Program Manager for the Farmer’s Market, says that “Sundial” bluegrass band and “Green” will be playing in the greenhouse as well.  Though there will be a lot of turn over products, Sarpong assures that plant starters will be the newest addition to this season’s market.

Rhode Island Boat Show

Looking for a fun family event to get you in the mood for summer?  The Rhode Island Boat Show will be happening this weekend at four different locations: Bristol, Jamestown, Warwick and Wakefield. There will be free admission and parking for the largest in-water Spring Boat Show and Open House.

This two day long event will happen on Saturday May 3 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  as well as Sunday May 4 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. According to the event website, participants intend to showcase a wide selection of both new and used sail and powerboats along with the latest in marine accessories and services.  Spectators can meet the experts, take a sailing lesson, or even try out a paddleboard.  Then, be sure to sample some of the finest food from around Rhode Island.
