Providence Top Walking City in US Says Prevention
The capital city took the #14 spot nationwide in the well-known health publication's new assessment of major American cities where "pedestrians give wheels a run for their money."
Providence: putting pedestrian safety at the forefront
Leaning on Walkscore.com's walkability scores, Prevention cited Providence's Walk Score of 72.7 out of a perfect 100, and offered this assessment of our strengths: "This historic New England college town recently enhanced streetscapes to put pedestrian safety at the forefront, making it all the more enticing to take in the quaint neighborhoods on foot," according to Prevention's Bari Nan Cohen. Further, Providence's "mix of hilly and flat terrain provides ample walking opportunities for every fitness level," said Cohen.
Top 5 Cities for Walking
Cambridge, MA (which recently topped GoLocal's ranking of New England's Best Cities), took top honors in the Prevention round-up with a Walk Score of 88.9. New York City was #2, Jersey City, NJ was #3, San Francisco, CA was #4, and neighboring Berkeley rounded out the Top 5.
In New England, Boston drew highest walking praise at #6, and Hartford, CT took the #13 spot, outpacing Providence by one place. No other New England cities made Prevention's Top 25, although New Haven, CT, got honorable mention for taking advantage of state funding to make pedestrian safety a priority.
