Christina Bevilacqua

Bevilacqua currently serves as Conversationalist-in-Residence at Trinity Repertory Company Theater in Providence. 

Prior to coming to Trinity, she worked at the Providence Athenaeum from 2005 to 2016, wherein 2006 she created the Athenaeum Salon, a weekly event bringing Athenaeum members and the general public together for conversations on such topics as history, visual art, theater, politics, fashion, collecting, literature, food, music, architecture, science, education, and urban policy.

In 2013, the RI Council for the Humanities awarded her the Tom Roberts Prize for Creative Achievement in the Humanities in recognition of the impact that the salon had on the cultural life in the state.

Brian Jepson

Jepson is a Content Manager at LinkedIn Learning/Lynda.com, where he manages the acquisition and development of Product Design and Manufacturing courses.

Before that, he was the book publisher for Maker Media. He is also a founding member of the National Maker Faire team and co-producer of the Rhode Island Mini Maker Faire, one of the longest-running independent Maker Faires. For the last 30 years, he has been working with AS220, a non-profit arts center in Providence that is home to the Providence Fab Lab.

Jones-Davis is the Executive Director of Nation of Makers, a national nonprofit whose mission is to support the full range of organizations that impact makers, by encouraging connections, broadly sharing resources, facilitating funding opportunities, engaging in policy development, and advocating for the maker movement.

Sneider is the Executive Director of the Steel Yard, where he has been an active community and staff member since 2005. The Steel Yard is an award-winning industrial arts center, a manufacturer of custom and functional public art, a craft school, shared studio, and Providence’s most unique private outdoor venue.

Kipp Bradford

Bradford is a Research Scientist at the MIT Media Lab, where his work focuses on reinventing thermal systems. He also explores innovation, manufacturing, and programming languages. 

He is a founder of start-ups in the fields of HVAC+R, transportation, consumer products, and medical devices, and holds numerous patents for his inventions.

Matthew Manos

Manos is an award-winning design strategist, social entrepreneur, and educator. He is the Founder and Managing Director of verynice, a design strategy consultancy that gives half of its work away for free to nonprofit organizations. verynice’s clientele includes Google, UNICEF, NASA, and the American Heart Association.

To date, verynice has donated over $6.5MM worth of pro-bono services and initiatives to benefit over 450 organizations across the globe.

Morgan Grefe

Grefe is the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Historical Society. She has been at the RIHS for more than twelve years, serving as the Director of the Goff Center for Education and Public Programs for 6.5 of those. 

Her work as a historian focuses on U.S. social, cultural and public history, with special attention on R.I. She holds a Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown and a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in the same.

Shey Rivera Rios

Rios is the Artistic Director of AS220. With a professional background in administration, she is also a performance and installation artist, musician and writer. At AS220, she focuses on community engagement strategies, cross sector partnerships, and strategic planning alongside a team of program leaders. 

Rivera was part of the founding team of Festival de la Palabra in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2010 (the largest literature festival in Puerto Rico), and reactivated the historic Museum House Concha Melendez in San Juan with literary arts programming.

PALO!, is a Miami-based band that is reinventing the classic Cuban sound for the next generation. Their signature Afro-Cuban funk sounds like salsa with a jazzy, soulful edge. Pianist Steve Roitstein, who has played with legends like Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, founded PALO! in 2003, and recruited fellow musicians like Philbert Armenteros (congas), Raymer Olalde (timbales), and Latin Grammy-nominated vocalist Leslie Cartaya for an improvised musical experiment.

Aurelio Martinez 

Martinez is one of the cultural standard bearers of the Garifuna people – descendants of West African and Amerindian peoples living along the Caribbean coast of Central America. One of Honduras’ most gifted performers, Aurelio is a singer-songwriter known for his powerful and evocative voice, as well as a brilliant guitarist and percussionist. His debut solo album, “Garifuna Soul” (2006), mixed his rich musical traditions with modern sounds – and earned him the title of Afropop Worldwide’s “Newcomer of the Year.”

Little Fools is made up of singer / lyricist, Shoshana and guitarist/songwriter, Aki. Shoshana’s narrative voice, while influenced by her love of the Great American songbook, and reflected in her classic lyrical storytelling is also wholly original. When paired Aki’s sound, the smoky contralto of her voice echoes over the melodic playing of the guitar. When working together, the duo begins their writing process with the intimacy of a singer-song writer duo while ultimately surrounding their sound with the richness of a blues rock band.

Local composer and songwriter Ben Shaw writes music from a variety of influences and for a wide range of disciplines. With help from his Brash Band, he explores his more folk/Americana based writings which take their sounds from equal parts Greenwich Village, Appalachia, Nashville, and New Orleans. This quartet of fiery musicians have crafted a sound unique to Providence.

Bellerophon

Bellerophon is a live alternative synth-pop project based out of Providence. Its music mixes punchy bass lines and danceable rhythms with dreamy melodies and intricate samples, combined with funky electric guitar riffs, subtle vocals, hyped analog beats, and ethereal synth pads. Bellerophon released its debut ep “Teosinte” on June 7, 2016, and is available for free streaming worldwide through most digital outlets. Shortly after Teosinte’s release, Bellerophon was awarded “Electronic Act of the Year” by Law and Order Party.

Case Closed

Case Closed! was founded by Sokeo Ros in 2004 to promote the empowerment of youth through performing arts. They focus on the expansion of hip-hop dance and theater to the urban community, as well as other communities, transforming what could be negativity into creativity.

They have performed at many different venues, such as community centers, school, cultural festivals, and universities as well as Sound Session, Providence Performing Arts Center, Veterans Memorial Auditorium and their home stage at Everett.

Case Closed! continues to work with the community to encourage the movement of youth empowerment through the arts.

Bettye LaVette

LaVette is a true legend of blues and soul, with a career spanning more than 50 years. She exploded out of Detroit at 16 years old with her first top 10 R&B hit, but it’s only within the last decade that she has truly earned recognition as one of America’s finest vocal talents. 

 Her most recent album, “Worthy” (2015), earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Blues Album and the award for Soul Blues Female Artist at the 2016 Blues Music Awards.

DeeDee Brown will act as a cultural ambassador, guiding the audience through the inner city experience via a live multi-media performance event inspired by her forthcoming documentary series, The Backstreets (Summer 2017). Maasss

Justin Kahn has been a performer-songwriter in the RI area since the mid-1990s. After studying multiple instruments (drums, guitar, etc), producing for bands like Combuster and The North Pole, and trying his hand producing mashups in 2008, he began releasing music online in 2014 as a solo act called “maasss.” Later that year Justin became a licensed performer in Providence, performing mostly around the New England region. Performances include karaoke-style singalongs, interpretative dances, and “insane banjo stylings.”

Funk Underground

The Funk Underground is a six-piece, live, instrumentalist band comprised of two emcees, an electric guitarist, an electric bassist, keyboardist, and drummer. Apart from performing original funk/hip-hop influenced music, the group showcases dancers RawKin RhythMix, The Funk Underground is collaborating with The Rhode Island Hip Hop Project to deliver a short (fifteen minute) documentary on RI hip-hop history before performing.

Pallbearer

Pallbearer emerged from Little Rock, Arkansas in 2012 with a stunning debut full-length, Sorrow and Extinction. The record, which played like a seamless 49-minute doom movement, melded pitch-perfect vintage sounds with a triumphant modern sensibility that made songs about death and loss feel joyfully ecstatic.

Pallbearer possessed what many other newer metal groups didn’t: perfect guitar tone, classic hooks, and a singer who could actually sing.

BANDALOOP will transform the facade of an everyday downtown building into their extraordinary dance floor with the powerful site-responsive performance #PVDPublicCanvas. Conceived and choreographed by artistic director Amelia Rudolph in collaboration with the dancers, the piece brings the ideas and stories of Providence residents into the perspective-bending work through the spoken word and song of local performers. The show will feature a score by Ben Juodvalkis, Providence’s Christopher Johnson and the Bay Area’s Tassiana Willis of Youth Speaks among other Providence artists.

Betty Bonifassi

Montreal’s Betty Bonifassi is a true musical traveler, using her deep, booming voice to explore everything from jazz to electronic to American roots music.

Perhaps best known for providing the singing voices of the title characters in the Oscar-nominated animated feature “The Triplets of Belleville," Betty has also gained acclaim for her work with fellow Quebecer DJ Champion and as one half of the electronic music duo Beast. She is one of the only artists from Quebec to have performed at both the Oscars and the Grammys.

KC & The Moaners

Heavily influenced by Ragtime and early jazz, jug bands first emerged around Louisville, Kentucky during the 1890s. Bands created a rhythmic, rollicking sound that was perfect for street performance and entertaining crowds at the Kentucky Derby. Recently nominated by Motif Magazine as folk artist of the year, KC & The Moaners tries to stay as close to the traditional sound and energy as it is able, honoring the time, place, and people who created the original jug band sound.

Oliver Penn

Oliver Penn is a guitarist and singer who brings a refreshing fervor to the stage. Born and raised in Providence, RI, Oliver was autonomous from the start. Teaching himself to play drums and guitar, he began listening and playing along to anything he could find. His family moved to Houston where he was introduced to the Texas music scene, and subsequently fell in love with the blues. Oliver has a distinct sound that expresses elements of both blues-rock and retro-soul.

The Holographics

The Holographics, comprised of Matt Arenburg, Brianna Kieon, Rachel Hermoian, Tori Hall, and Lauren Marques, is a five-piece alternative rock band with roots in the Providence music scene.  With their premiere single “An Hour Ahead,” due out shortly, and their full-length debut album in the works, these young musicians have made extraordinary strides in a short time.  Formed in August of 2016 after having been friends for a number of years, they found their ambient, vocal harmony-laden sound quickly by drawing heavily on the influences of classic rock and contemporary artists alike.

Mike Boston 

Mike Boston, is a rapper-entrepreneur-activist who has gained local and national attention as the founder of Mobile Stü, a mobile studio he takes into tough urban areas to give inner-city kids a voice—and to collaborate musically with police officers. To date, Mike has appeared on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, The Ellen Show, and he has a documentary series in the making. Daniel Bernard Roumain

Daniel Bernard Roumain returns for a massive musical spectacle in the shadow of the iconic Cranston Street Armory. En Masse is a large-scale composition created for up to 500 musicians that is entirely new every time it is performed.

This musical celebration – a cross between a flash mob and a processional – features marching bands and musicians from across Rhode Island.

Community MusicWorks

Community MusicWorks celebrates the culmination of its 20th season on the finale day of PVDFest by inviting violin virtuoso Johnny Gandlesman from the Silk Road Project along with multi-instrumentalist Gonzalo Grau and his nine-piece salsa band La Clave Secreta to join CMW faculty, students and alumni in a reprise of “Fantasía con Guayaba Habanera.”
