Redwood Library to Honor Pulitzer Prize Winner Wood

Gordon Wood, a Pulitzer prize winning historian, will be honored by the Redwood Library on Thursday, November 10, as the second recipient of the Abraham Redwood Medal for Contributions to American History and Culture. 

The Abraham Redwood medal was designed by John ‘Fud’ Benson, and its creation underwritten by the Alletta Morris McBean Foundation. Executive Director, Benedict Leca, will award the medal.

“Dr. Wood is one of the foremost scholars of the American Revolution. He has written extensively on America’s founding fathers and on the history of our nation. He is a Rhode Island academic of the highest and most accomplished order, and the Redwood is delighted to award him the Redwood Medal,” said President of Redwood’s Board of Directors, Dr. Edwin G. Fischer.

The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Casino Theatre, where Wood will give a talk titled "Advice to the Egyptians (and other Arabs) from the Founding Fathers." Tickets are $25. 

Gordon Wood 

Gordon Wood is the Alva O. Way University Professor Emeritus at Brown University. He received his B.A. degree from Tufts University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. 

He taught at Harvard University and the University of Michigan before coming to Brown in 1969. 

Wood is the author of multiple works, including "The Radicalism of the American Revolution" in 1992, which won the Pulitzer Prize for history and the Ralph Waldo Emerson Prize in 1993. 

Professor Wood is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.
