The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 19, at 2pm at the Providence Art Club in Providence.
The reception is the first of five Black History events organized by the Society to raise funds to support its African American collection and lecture series for adults and students.
One of the most respected cultural leaders in Rhode Island
“Keith Stokes is a modern-day griot,” said Joyce Stevos, president of the Society. “Over the years, he has protected and promoted African American history in Newport and educated thousands of Rhode Islanders about the value of historic preservation. Mr. Stokes knows as well as any Rhode Islander how to engage people from all walks of life in the ongoing struggle to protect our history. He is one of the most respected cultural leaders in Rhode Island.”
The reception is being hosted by Providence Art Club president Dan Mechnig and chaired by former Society president Ray Rickman.
