Rhode Island's Davis, Jenkins Take Home Emmy Awards

Rhode Island's Richard Jenkins and Viola Davis both took home Emmy Awards on Sunday night at the 67th Annual Emmy Awards. 

Jenkins won his first ever Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a limited series for his performance in the HBO four-episode series of Olive Kitteridge. Davis won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama with her role as Annalise Keating on ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder.

Viola Davis, from Central Falls, becomes the first African- American actress to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. 

Davis' previous awards include two Tony awards and received her first Oscar nomination in 2009 for her performance in Doubt. Davis received a second Oscar nomination in 2012 for her performance as Aibileen Clark in The Help.

Davis is currently starring as Amanda Waller in the DC Comics movie Suicide Squad with Will Smith and Jared Leto, who plays the Joker.

The film is set to be released on August 5, 2016.

To win the Emmy, Jenkins beat out Oscar-winner Adrien Brody as Houdini, Ricky Gervais, Timothy Hutton, David Oyelowo, and Mark Rylance as English reformist Thomas Cromwell in Wolf Hall. 

Jenkins' only other award recognition came at the Oscars where he received a Best Actor nomination for The Visitor in 2009. 

Jenkins grew up in DeKalb, Illinois and moved to Rhode Island after getting a one-year gig at Trinity Rep in the show "You Can't Take It With You." 

Jenkins currently resides in Cumberland and is a member at Wannamoisett Country Club.
