RI Favorites - Best Communities

What makes a community great?

We asked this question and on the basis of extensive statistical analysis, created a series of pieces that not only named the top community in Rhode Island, but ranked the rest of the 38 cities and towns. As can be expected, this created huge interest throughout the state. In fact, more than 50,000 Rhode Islanders checked in at GoLocal to find out what RI's Best Community was, and where their hometown ranked.

And the winner was?

The top community in RI surprised many: the city of Cranston. The state's second-largest community grabbed top honors, and as Mayor Allan Fung put it to GoLocalProv, "It's a great place to work and play. It has a proud past and a very promising future." As a result of the piece, the

Cranston City Council even passed a resolution citing its ranking statewide.

More suprises? The number two slot went to... Foster... for low crime, a vibrant arts scene, good schools, plus sprawling woodlands and streams, and a cultural wealth of colonial architecture. Three? South Kingstown. Fourth went to Glocester and fifth to Barrington.

A GoLocal chart, outlining all 39 communities and plotting performance on every measure, was phenomenally popular, as readers checked in on their own towns, not to mention scoping out where they might like to move.
