“Healthy fun in public spaces is at the core of our mission to create a world-class parks system in Providence’s historic urban core. We believe the best way to transform a space is by transforming the way people use it. With a variety of activities and programming throughout the season, we’re transforming Kennedy Plaza into a first-choice summer destination for everyone,” said DPPC Executive Director Cliff Wood.
All events take place in Burnside Park, near the Banjotti Fountain. Events are "sprinkle or shine," but may be delayed or canceled due to severe weather.
The season kicks off on Wednesday, June 6 with Czésare Santana at Noon Tunes, the weekly lunchtime free performances from local musicians in a relaxed environment. Performances run from 12 – 1 p.m. every Wednesday and food trucks are on site. The series continues through June with Michelle Cruz performing on June 13, and Hapax Trio performing on June 20 and Miss Wednesday on June 27.
The Burnside Park Music Series + Beer Garden turns the park into a mini-music festival featuring local and regional musicians, as well as local beer from Trinity Brewhouse and food from a different food truck each week. The free event happens every Thursday from 4:30-7: 30 p.m. with a variety of music that includes rock, electronic, jazz, salsa, and more.
Storytime + Art in the Park is two children’s programs in one: Storytime hosts local authors, illustrators, storytellers, and performers to inspire a love of reading. This series kicks off on Thursday, July 12 with Big Nazo.
Play in the Park is a free, family-friendly program that features a range of activities every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., including music, art, science, nature, and more. The DPPC’s Imagination Center, which includes the open air reading Room and Creative Playspace, will be open during Play in the Park, offering free access to books, art and crafts, theater projects, and more. This series kicks off on Tuesday, July 10.
The Downtown Farmer’s Market will feature local farms, producers, and food trucks using local ingredients every Tuesday from 3-6 p.m.
