Feminist, journalist, and activist Gloria Steinem visited Brown University on Monday to speak and present a screening of the new HBO documentary "Gloria: In Her Own Words." A conversation between Steinem and President Ruth Simmons followed the screening. Steinem, the widow of actor Christian Bale's father David Bale, spoke of her experiences with gender inequality, her fight for women's rights, politics, change, and more. Some of the more memorable quotes from the evening include: "Change is like a tree, and it doesn’t start from the top," " I escaped to India for two reasons. The first was because I was engaged," and " Empathy is the most revolutionary emotion." There was also much applause when she and President Simmons high-fived each other. If you've been to see the acclaimed horror film The Cabin in the Woods, then you've seen an actor who resides in Rhode Island. Richard Jenkins, who is known for starring roles in television shows and films such as HBO's Six Feet Under, Step Brothers, and The Visitor, plays technician Gary Sitterson in the genre-bending horror flick. After graduating college Jenkins moved to Providence with his wife to join the Trinity Repertory Company (of which he served as Artistic Director for some time), and now he lives in Cumberland. He is also known for collaborating with the Farrelly Brothers, who are from Cumberland, having appeared in movies of theirs like There's Something About Mary, Outside Providence, and the upcoming 2012 Three Stooges Movie. Jenkins is also known to always eat Christmas Eve dinner at The Capital Grille in Providence and has been spotted occasionally at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln. Two Rhode Island School of Design graduates have been working hard on the big and small screens. First of all, the iconic Mockingjay pin that Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss wears on the mega-hit movie The Hunger Games (produced by Brown alumnus Nina Jacobson) was designed by Dana Schneider '82. Schneider has made jewelry for movies such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Transformers, and X-Men, and for musicians like Marilyn Manson, Pink, Snoop Dogg, and Cher. The other RISD grad is actress Jemima Kirke, who plays the British Bohemian Jessa Johansson on HBO's new comedy Girls. She first appeared in her childhood friend Lena Dunham's film Tiny Furniture, after which Dunham tapped her to play Jessa in her show Girls. Kirke is the daughter of Simon Kirke, drummer of the band Free, and Lorraine Kirke, owner of the boutique Geminola, which supplied many outfits to Sex and the City. Keep an eye out for both of these women in their future ventures...

Chris Matthews, the host of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews and The Chris Matthews Show on NBC, was supposed to give a lecture last night at Brown University entitled "John F. Kennedy's Profile in Courage." But unfortunately, due to a change in assignment by MSNBC, the talk had to be rescheduled to the next academic year. As a former Peace Corps member and journalist who covered events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and Good Friday Peace Talks in Northern Ireland, Matthews was an ideal man to present such a talk. He has some local connections as well; Matthews attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester for his undergraduate studies. I guess we'll have to wait a couple of months to hear his thoughts and opinions in person...
