Seen: Indie Rock Band fun + More

Remember when we reported that world-renowned boxer Vinny Paz was seen in Providence? Well now we know why he was back in his home state. He was starring in a play in Westerly. That’s right, last Friday and Saturday Paz played US Senator Andrew Makepeace Ladd III in Stage Door Theater Company’s Production of Love Letters by A.R. Gurney, at Haversham Tavern’s first Dinner Theater series. This isn’t the first time he’s acted- in 2007 he starred in the Rhode Island-made film Thunder Doyle, which also featured Vincent Pastore and Anthony Ribustello from The Sopranos, and legendary singer Frankie Valli. There is also a movie called “Paz” currently in production about him, starring Twilight’s Peter Facinelli as the champ himself. Cranston native Paz reportedly said, “Acting is just a lot of BS, anyway…fighting is the only real thing in life, and fighting is not acting.” Sounds just like something the macho guy would say….

Tomorrow evening, a young hometown chef returns to Providence. Nick Curtin, who recently competed against Iron Chef Marc Forgione in Battle Tilapia on the Food Network’s Iron Chef America, is coming back to his old school the Wheeler School to give a cooking demonstration/class to alumni. Although Curtin lost by a close margin, his food and originality were praised, as you’d expect from someone who worked at the acclaimed East Side restaurant La Laiterie. Just shows that Providence produces some great chefs, even if they didn’t go to JWU…
Last year’s Heels and Wheels fundraiser in North Kingstown was a big success, raising $75,000 for families dealing with sick children. This year, organizers Toby and Deb Aaron of The Wickford Collection want to make the Wickford-style car show and tailgate even better, by partnering with the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Started by TV journalist and former co-anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight Robert Woodruff, who was critically injured by a bomb in Iraq, the foundation provides resources and support to injured service members, veterans and their families. This will be the first time the non-profit has teamed up with a grassroots organization, and because of their support this year the event, set for June 1 and 2, will benefit the Bob Woodruff Foundation and the Rhode Island National Guard. It will also be a bit more grandiose this year, with a VIP cocktail party beforehand, comedian Brian Glowacki emceeing, and a possible “celebrity appearance.” We’ll keep you updated on that as the date grows closer…
And there are some celebrity events coming up you should be aware of. On Friday, March 16, singer Chaka Khan is coming to the Twin River Casino Event Center in Lincoln. Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood of “Whose Line is It Anyway?” will be appearing at The Vets on March 30. Third Eye Blind and Matisyahu are playing at the URI Ryan Center on April 1. And the lineup for the Newport Folk Festival on July 28 and July 29 has just been released, including acts such as Iron & Wine, My Morning Jacket, Deer Tick, Conor Oberst, and Tom Morello. Get your tickets before they sell out…
