Seen: Mos Def, Gilbert Gottfried + More

Hitting Providence's newest club: Mos Def
One of rap’s classic figures was on stage in Providence this weekend. Mos Def put on a great show at Fete Providence on Dike Street, reminding everyone how they did things back during the golden age of hip hop. Mos recently had an important guest-starring role on Showtime’s Dexter, a performance for which many say he deserves an Emmy, and he has acted in many other shows and movies, including House and Be Kind Rewind. And just so you know, the next time you see him, he won’t be Mos Def anymore, he’ll be going by his other stage name Yasiin Bey…

Actor, voice-actor, and comedian Gilbert Gottfried was at Catch a Rising Star comedy club at Twin River in Lincoln on Friday. Known for voicing Iago from Disney’s Aladdin and the Aflac duck (among many other characters), the former Saturday Night Live cast member showed the crowd why he’s known as “the comedian’s comedian.” Luckily he avoided making any really controversial jokes (his timing is sometimes not the best), and the audience loved his wacky voice and witty comedy…

Lovely, funny, and caffeinated: Lucy Davis
One cool coffee shop had one famous customer last week. Lucy Davis, who played Dawn on the original BBC version of The Office, was seen getting some caffeine-fueled beverages at White Electric Coffee on Westminster Street in Providence. The actress, who also had a starring role in the horror-comedy film Shaun of the Dead is married to actor Owain Yeoman of The Mentalist, but there’s no word on whether he was seen with her…

If you can’t get a celebrity here, then the next best thing is a celebrity’s dog. Martha Stewart’s chow Genghis Khan took Best in Breed at the Bay Colony Dog Show and Canine Pet Expo in Providence this weekend, although the media mogul and professional home maker did not come along. The pooch traveled all the way to the Rhode Island Convention Center for the competition, and according to his post on Martha’s pet blog “The Daily Wag,” he knew he was born to win. Apparently he was also born to eat, as he posted pictures of some tasty-looking dog treats from the show…

Newport-born Survivor winner Richard Hatch has been released from jail… again. His nine-month sentence for failing to pay taxes for a second time was up on Monday, and when the former Celebrity Apprentice contestant got out, he was not happy. He complained that he was a victim of injustice by the legal system, telling E! Online, “People don't understand how broken our court systems are and particularly corrupt the system in Rhode Island is.” He also claimed that his status as a gay man increased his persecution. But on the bright side, he has reportedly been working on a deal for a new reality TV show about him and the children he has produced from sperm donation. At least he likes to keep things interesting…
