Skye Gallery Announces May Exhibit "Isolation"

Work by Brett Cimino/Skye Gallery
Skye Gallery in Providence has announced its May exhibit titled “Isolation.”

“A visual exploration of our growing sense of isolation—fed by the trend toward social affinity to protect our overly important yet fragile identities, the role of technology in our lives, a grossly divisive political discourse, and general disconnection from the earth - by seven area artists ranging in age from 22 to 72,”  writes the gallery in their press release.

The exhibit will be on display through May 27, 2019.

The Artists

Shari Weschler is a Rhode Island painter focused on unveiling the multiple levels of human and humaness, creating visuals that transcend obvious assumptions and are influenced by quantum mechanics, the psyche, theater, animal nature, technology, communication and ancient history.

Brett Cimino is a Rhode Island artist and author of Italian and Lebanese descent whose work explores the pain, joy and absurdity of contemporary life through intimate tales that are full of irony, humor and terror. “...it’s all about emotion; a feeling of raw nostalgia, the history of a mark that can tell a thousand stories.”

Kelly Knight is a multidisciplinary artist who takes home in Providence. “I am interested in storytelling traditions; in the feminine experience in society and nature; the history of objects and buildings; in ancestry; and the juxtaposition of materiality and spirituality.”

Savonnara Alexander Sok is a Providence artist of Cambodian descent. Influenced by Buddhist and Hip Hop sensibilities, his work explores tragedies, miracles and love. “We’re all born together. Different times. Different beginnings. But we’re on this earth together. And we end up at the same exact destination.”

Sierra Sanchez is a Providence multidisciplinary artist with unique vision. Working through personal narratives, she creates work describing apocalyptic dreamscape, moments of decision, and intimacies with surreal sensibilities. Her interest is in revealing truths and observations about the way we operate within and without society to confront sexual objectification, imposter syndrome, illusions of power, dreams, nightmares and joy.

James Montford (Ari) is a conceptual artist who moves between Cambridge and Providence. His work confronts deep issues of identity and lost histories that feed social inequities. “We are here on this planet and I’m trying to toy with the notion and anticipate the notion that we’ll all be in space,” Ari says. “Am I going to get there? Is this skin color going to get there? If so, what’s going to be the process? … In space will it be hands up, don’t shoot?”

Peruko Ccopacatty is an international artist known for dramatic and monumental works in metal and the wall mural spanning four decades. Born on Lake Titicaca in the Andes of Peru, Ccopacatty is an indigenous artist of Aymara heritage who works and lives in West Kingston, RI. His work expresses his personal identification to his rich cultural history while focusing on the power of art to synthesize and express a universal humanity.
