Kevin Eastman and his co-creator Peter Laird debuted the Ninja Turtles in May of 1984 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1.

The first book, published by Mirage Studios, debut at a comic book convention at a local Sheraton Hotel in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The book was printed in over-sized magazine style format using black and white artwork and was limited to only 3,250 copies.

Today, that book, in mint condition, can be bought for as much as $27,000.00

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles #1
The comics tell the story of four fictional anthropomorphic titles named after four Renaissance Italian artists, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello as well as their rat sensei Splinter, who trained the turtles in ninjutsu.

Throughout the books, the Turtles go from vigilantes to super heroes defending New York City from their nemesis Shredder and his Foot Soldiers.

While the comics are dark and gritty, the Heroes on a Half Shell are loved for their obsession with pizza and their hit one liner, "Cowabunga!"

The Turtles Today

Since that debut day in 1984, the Ninja Turtles have become as popular a super hero franchise as any, with multiple TV shows, comic book series, action figures and both live action and animated movies. The Turtles are taking it to the big screen again in Mid-2016.
