Brown University has appointed hip-hop singer Wyclef Jean as a visiting fellow in its Department of Africana Studies for the 2010-11 academic year. Haitian-born Jean most recently gained international attention for announcing his candidacy for president in Haiti. Ultimately, the singer abandoned his bid to run in his native, earthquake-ravaged nation’s election after the U.S.-raised star failed to meet the country’s requirement that all presidential candidates retain at least five consecutive years of residency.
Jean, 37, will engage in activities related to Brown’s Haiti Initiative, including lectures, faculty conversations and classes. The Grammy Award winner made his first visit to campus Monday, attended two inaugural lectures, and predicted his time at the Ivy League institution would be "a period of learning and reflection."
