Antignano of Angelo's Civita Farnese Celebrates 95 Years of Italian Classics on Federal Hill

A staple to Historic Federal Hill’s Italian dining scene, Angelo’s Civita Farnese’s Jamie Antignano talks about the restaurant's history with GoLocalProv’s Laura Afonso.

Opening in 1924, Angelo’s started as the “working man’s” restaurant, offering affordable and traditional meals whose recipes came directly from Italy.

A family owned and operated business, Antignano has been involved since she was a child, “My father and I are there everyday and my mother does all of the baking. My dad is the third generation and he has had it for thirty years and that makes me the fourth generation. Our regulars have been dining with us for forty or fifty years, and our serves and chef have been around thirty, forty years as well."

Many of the dishes have been on the menu since the very beginning, Antignano says, “We want to be the best quality and the best price, and fast service. We pride ourselves of greeting you at the door and knowing your order when you sit down.”

Although Angelo’s still serves its classic dishes like meatballs and fries from 1924, they are also bringing new and fresh Italian dishes to the menu.

“We started making spaghetti donuts about six months ago and they’ve been a huge hit. It’s red sauce, cheese, pasta and egg for binding, and then we bake them. But we can do pink vodka sauce, alfredo, and pesto, and they’re so good” says Antignano.

Having been open for 95 years, Angelo’s is planning five years of celebration leading up to the 100 year anniversary.

Antignano wants to highlight the customers who have been coming for years, “We have some fun surprises. We will be celebrating all of the history and the people who have walked through the doors. Celebrating Providence, celebrating the restaurant, and celebrating our guests.”
