Don't Count Out the Kennedys Just Yet: Lawless LIVE

"There was no reason for Markey to lose the election, and no argument that Kennedy made that he should be in the Senate right now," said Lawless. "Voters have long believed if it’s not broken, there’s not reason to fix it. Although it’s possible to knock out an incumbent and we’ve seen it happen occasionally, there was nothing to suggest Markey was vulnerable, and it was up to Kennedy to define those vulnerabilities and he wasn’t able to."

"You might remember that AOC was a big Sanders supporter when there were many young people running," said Lawless. "What we’re beginning to see is the sorting out of the progressive wing of the party and the more moderate wing. I’m reluctant to use that term though, because even the moderate wing today is quite progressive."
Looking Ahead
In New Jersey, Amy Kennedy defeated Brigid Harrison to win a highly competitive Democratic primary.
"If Democrats have a good year — and turnout is high as we expect — she’ll win that race," said Lawless.
"In terms of the Kennedy clan overall, although this was a loss, I wouldn’t count them out," she added. "There’s a whole generation of Kennedys now on the brink and precipe of deciding if they want to run for office as their way of pursuing their public service obligation."
"My bet is if we don’t have any for the next year or two, we have not seen the end of this family," said Lawless.
