Father Escobar on Personal Impact of Impaired Driving, on GoLocal LIVE for The Ripple Effect

Father Joe Escobar
Father Joe Escobar joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE as part of The Ripple Effect, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s campaign to raise awareness around impaired driving — and how losing his brother to an accident has impacted his life.

“I got brought into [The Ripple Effect} by accident,” said Escobar. “There was another priest contacted because they wanted faith leaders for the DOT’s “Buckle Up Faithfully” campaign and then I got an email inviting me. I told them I had a personal connection — then it blossomed from there — and I was invited to do the segment.”

Escobar spoke to losing his brother nearly 24 years ago.

“Russ was 31 when it happened. He was a young man full of life, had his own business, wife, three children — he was enjoying himself,” said Escobar. “It caught up with him in the end.”

“It [will be] 24 years in November. The memories are always there,” said Escobar. “Since The Ripple Effect and thinking about if he was here, how life would be for both us — he would be 55 now. He’s forever young in my memory…it’s made life a little more challenging.”

Escobar spoke to his unique perspective having had the loss of his brother — and being a faith leader.

“A lot of people take for granted priests, religious leaders — [they think] that our life is more tranquil, that we don’t face difficulties,” said Escobar. “Being a priest isn’t an insurance policy.  I can empathize with people.”
