RI Nonprofits In Need of Nearly $5M — United Way of RI’s Nicolato LIVE

United Way of Rhode Island's Nicolato appeared on GoLocal LIVE on Monday.
United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI) Executive Director Cortney Nicolato said that the financial needs of nonprofits in the state are at a critical level during the coronavirus crisis. Just to keep important agencies operating there is a need for an additional $5 million to be raised.

In an appearance on GoLocal LIVE, Nicolato said that fundraising efforts by UWRI - along with the Rhode Island Foundation — have topped over $7 million, but nonprofits’ needs far exceed that.

“The nonprofit sector is truly struggling right now, especially our small non-profits who are doing absolutely amazing things,” said Nicolato. “These are our nonprofit organizations who are doing testing in the community, who are keeping our homeless neighbors safe, who are providing essential activities — and they’ve lost a lot of revenue, they’ve lost a lot of fundraising events, donors trying to figure out what’s next.”

“We’ve very proud that our COVID-9 response fund in partnership with the Rhode Island Foundation has put out 5.7 million dollars into the community. In addition, on April 1st we raised an additional $1.3 million for the nonprofit community. But it’s not enough,” she said. “Over the last week, our COVID-19 response fund has received an additional 120 applications for an additional $5.7 million. We only have $1.2 [million] left in that fund. We know our nonprofit organizations are struggling.”

Nicolato discussed how Rhode Islanders can help — including donating to the COVID-19 response fund.

Census Data Critical

Nicolato also stressed the importance for Rhode Islanders to take part in the 2020 census.

“The Governor says that we’re receiving $1.25 billion in stimulus funding, and that is figured out through a formula where the Census — and the population — plays an incredible part, and we have to be all counted. These funds and being counted by the census will support us for 10 plus years,” said Nicolato.
