Why Diversity and Inclusion Matter to IGT - and RI: Senior Global Program Manager Huckel LIVE

Senior Global Program Manager of Diversity and Inclusion at IGT Stephanie Huckel joined GoLocalProv News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE, where she spoke to growing up in Providence, her journey to IGT, and why she sees IGT’s employees — and community involvement — as an asset to the state.

“I grew up in the Wanskuck neighborhood, and I had the privilege of growing up in a super diverse place,” said Huckel of growing up in Providence. “My parents were from Massachusetts and Connecticut and they really wanted us to grow up in a diverse neighborhood, because they knew diversity was really important to the lenses we develop as we grow."

"So I grew up in the Providence public schools and had the opportunity after a number of years after college to get engaged in this work that revolves around diversity and inclusion," added Huckel.

Huckel spoke to joining IGT in 2018, and engaging employees locally — and around the world — in workgroups that focus that on their passions and strengths.

Diversity Work at IGT — and Impact on State

“Our diversity and inclusion groups are just another way to help employees connect with each other — but also absolutely to the community. There’s such an ability to do that in Rhode Island, because IGT’s North America home is down the street,” said Huckel. “That means we have stronger bonds here, which means we are able to connect to community organizations in our hometown in the way that we just might not be able to do if we weren’t here.”

“So It’s really rewarding for me as an employee to be able to work for an employer that’s also connected and committed to the organizations that mean a lot to me,” said Huckel.

Huckel also spoke to the opportunities for growth for employees at IGT — which she said she also sees as an asset to the state.

“In my short time at IGT I’ve seen employees be given opportunities for growth -- and what I’ve learned is they are not the exception, in fact, it sort of feels like they’re the rule. I have so many colleagues who have started out in one role and the company gave them an opportunity because they saw their potential, more than they saw just their previous work history,” said Huckel.

“I think that’s really powerful, because as I look around me and I look at my colleagues [and] the opportunities they’ve been given here in Rhode Island, they’ve been given opportunities to better their lives, their families and their world experience in ways that they wouldn’t have if IGT wasn’t hear,” said Huckel.
