The implications of the natural gas supply emergency on Aquidneck Island are beginning to become clear, in that the disaster will impact ten thousand Rhode Islanders, adversely affect hundreds of Rhode Island business, cost tens of millions and no one is answering who will pay for it all. 

This emergency will not be over soon either. According to Governor Gina Raimondo and officials from National Grid, this emergency will last a week or longer.

The damage will be felt by closed businesses, students missing school, damages to homes and a hit on the Newport brand. Newport is a tourist mecca and is listed as one of the top destinations in for winter. U.S. News and World Report ranked Newport as one of "The 30 Top Romantic Winter Getaways."

"Newport, Rhode Island, is well-known for its Gilded Age mansions and snowy Cliff Walk during the winter. Couples can explore the Brick Market Place for a local shopping experience, dine at the White Horse Tavern, where colonists and British soldiers were known to spend time, or check out the Newport Winter Festival – a mid- to late February extravaganza with concerts, a chili cook-off and more," wrote the magazine.
