During that time frame, the top three prescribing internal medicine doctors in Rhode Island had over 150,000 prescriptions filled with a retail price of over $7.5 million.

GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTThis data comes from an analysis conducted by ProPublica who obtained prescribing data from Medicare’s prescription drug benefit, known as Part D, was compiled and released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The data for 2013 includes more than 1.4 billion prescriptions written by nearly 1.3 million doctors, nurses and other providers. This database lists about 410,000 of those providers who wrote 50 or more prescriptions for at least one drug that year. Almost three-fourths went to patients 65 and older; the rest were for disabled patients.
