Anna Cano-Morales: 14 To Watch in Rhode Island in 2014

Anna Cano-Morales, Director of the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University, Chair of the Central Falls School District Board of Trustees
A 2013 RI YWCA "Woman of Achievement," Cano-Morales is no stranger to accolades for her work in the community. The Central Falls native is the Director of the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University and is Chair of the Central Falls School District Board of Trustees.

Cano-Morales was certainly no stranger to GoLocal's Hot or Not lists this year, earning multiple "hot" nods for her work, including LPI reports focusing on the state's latino workforce. And Cano-Morales is forward thinking when it comes to educational opportunities, and talked with GoLocal about the biggest challenges she saw facing Rhode Island.

"Meet the academic potential of all students but especially with regards to urban schools students—3 out of 4 are Latinos in Providence, Central Falls, and Pawtucket," said Cano-Morales. "Connect through specific best practices the academic successes of our students to careers jobs. Investing in schools is economic development as a whole for Rhode Island. Increase the access to—and completion of—higher education and post- secondary opportunities. Poverty? Struggling families? Education and access to careers and competitive wages is the best antidote."

Cano-Morales was recently front and center at a panel discussion on educational funding at Bryant University—and calling into question the constitutionality of providing students the opportunity to have access to quality schools.

"I think using the word 'constitution' is a provocative way to look at how we fund, implement, regulate education in Rhode Island," she said.

As budgetary concerns will no doubt be on the table in the coming years with projected decline of state revenue from Twin River Casino when Massachusetts casinos are operational, watch for Cano-Morales and others to demand that education funding not be taken away from the state's students to balance Rhode Island's books.
