Another Year, Another PawSox Stadium Controversy

Will the PawSox owners succeed -- or strike out -- in their newest effort to get a new stadium?
Pawtucket Red Sox Chairman Larry Lucchino's announcement that the team is looking at a new "public park" in Pawtucket marks the latest for the AAA club, whose owners were unsuccessful in their effort in 2015 to have a new stadium built in Providence.

A feasibility study was recently done on the projected costs for renovation -- or rebuilding-- of the PawSox' current home at McCoy Stadium, which was completed in 1942 and became home to Boston Red Sox minor league affiliates starting in the 1970s.

All indications, however, point to Lucchino and the ownership group looking for a new location -- and a new ask from Rhode Islanders.

"We have worked with the city [of Pawtucket} and leaders of the city and have learned...the civic pride, civic possibilities," said Lucchino on Monday. "As a result, our very strong preference is to stay home. The Paw Sox belong in Pawtucket."

Lucchino mentioned few particulars -- only that the yet to be unveiled PawSox project "fits in beautifully with [Pawtucket Mayor Donald] Grebien's 20/20 vision."

"We've often said it's going to be more than a ballpark," said Lucchino. "The opportunity is present here. A new facility may be a ballpark, but it will be a public park the other 270 days a year."

Next Steps

While Lucchino and other PawSox officials including President Dr. Charles Steinberg were on hand on Monday for Grebien's wide-ranging forum on downtown Pawtucket development, few details have been revealed as to next steps in the process -- or if there is going to be an ask of the state this year, with less than 3 months remaining in the General Assembly session.

In was late April 2015 that the PawSox ownership, led by the late Jim Skeffington, pitched their ask of the RI Commerce Corporation, which Governor Gina Raimondo immediately said -- the same day as the meeting - that the request was not "fair" to taxpayers.

And while no formal ask has been made in 2017, that hasn't stopped politicians from prognosticating.

The ill-fated proposal in Providence 195 land, in 2015.
House Minority Leader, Republican Rep. Patricia Morgan, took to Facebook Tuesday to post the following.

Heard the latest? Now the Pawsox millionaires are willing to let the taxpayers 'own' the stadium they want the state to pay for. What pals!

They envision a brand new and expensive stadium with all the latest amenities for a dwindling number of attendees to watch AAA baseball. Of course, the owners' chief goal is to get their investment dollars back. And putting their money on the line doesn't appear to be on the table, or diamond, as it were.

What didn't they get when taxpayers overwhelmingly rejected their last proposal? Just because it is now 5 miles north doesn't make it any better nor any more affordable.

We are NOT a lightly taxed state. We have a very high cost of living that is making it increasingly difficult for hardworking Rhode Islanders. And these very wealthy insiders want to make it even harder?!
Let them use their own money and stop scheming to take ours!
