As Abuse Details Emerge, More Calls for Catholic Bishops to Resign

On Thursday, Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian called on Bishop Malone of the Diocese of Buffalo to resign his position.
“Given the exclusion of a reporter from a press conference, the continued attempts to cover up the sexual abuse crisis and the utter moral chaos within the Diocese of Buffalo, as a matter of human decency Bishop Malone should resign,” writes Garabedian.

Sexual Abuse in Providence
As GoLocalProv reported back in July, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha announced the State of Rhode Island has signed an agreement to gain access to the Diocese of Providence's records dating back to the 1950s in an effort to find additional cases of sexual abuse by church priests and staff.
“While this voluntary, additional disclosure by the diocese is an important step forward in our review, much additional work remains. We will not hesitate to take any additional steps that may prove necessary to fully determine the scope of misconduct here and take appropriate action,” said Neronha.
Prior to that, the Diocese of Providence released the names of clergy, diocesan and religious order priests as well as deacons, who have been "credibly" accused of sexual abuse of minors, as GoLocalProv reported.
“Reflecting [on] our commitment to justice, the Diocese of Providence has resolved over 130 claims and paid out over $21 million in legal settlements. Additionally, a pastoral outreach program has provided victims with nearly $2.3 million for the cost of counseling in order to facilitate healing and wholeness. There have been many long-standing and effective efforts towards prevention here,” said the Church in written testimony to the House committee back in February.
