Bishop and Fired Catholic Music Director Get Into Media War

Bishop Tobin's Essay - click on the link in article to read.
The battle between Michael Templeton, the fired music director of St. Mary’s Church, and Bishop Thomas Tobin took another twist as both went to their respective media to attack one another.

As GoLocalProv was first to report on September 21, Templeton was fired after the church learned of his gay marriage. On Friday, Tobin wrote an essay titled, “All Are Welcome*" (with the asterisk), which outlined his interpretation of church doctrine, and who is welcome -- and who is not.

“The hard truth is, that while all are welcome, not everyone is suited for the Catholic community. If they cannot freely accept the faith and teachings of the Church, if their conscience or lifestyle leads them elsewhere, so be it. We will wish them well and pray that God accompanies them in their journey of faith,” wrote Tobin in The RI Catholic - the Diocese of Providence’s newspaper.

The essay by the Bishop sparked a number of angry social media posts by Templeton.

Templeton's Response

On Sunday night, Templeton wrote on Facebook, “(My apologies, in advance, for an unusually caustic post.) You really can't make this s__t up. Just when you think this pitiful excuse for a Christian couldn't possibly be any more despicable. I'll tell you where you can shove your asterisk, Thomas. Oh well, more of a reason for Pope Francis to get wind of what goes on at the top of the Diocese of Providence. A--hole!”

The media that each utilized demonstrated the generational difference between the older conservative Catholic Bishop Tobin and the younger, gay progressive Catholic Templeton. The conflict in the American Catholic church continues to play out real-time in Rhode Island.

On Monday, Templeton added yet another post to Facebook, first posting the following portion of Tobin's essay. "When we say 'all are welcome' it does not mean that someone is entitled to work for the Church or fill a ministerial position while being publicly involved in an immoral relationship or activity that contradicts the fundamental principles and well-known teachings of the Church on matters of faith and morals," Templeton quoted Tobin.

Templeton than added his thoughts to Tobin's.

"Perhaps, Thomas, you might examine the ranks of your seminarians and ordained men before making such self-righteous statements. The blatant immoral 'relationships and activities' of many under your 'care' is well known and well documented," wrote Templeton. "Wouldn't knowledge of such things crush the spirits of your blind followers and loyal subjects? Uh oh, you may need more asterisks!"

GoLocal was first to report on the firing of Templeton and that article set off more than a month of discussion which ultimately was reported around the country:

The former Music Director at the Church of St. Mary in Providence is speaking out, after being fired on Monday because he said "of the person I love"  -- his male partner, whom he married in 2015.

In a statement posted to Facebook on Tuesday, Michael Templeton, who resides in Warren, spoke to a conversation with church clergy that he said was "bizarre, unprofessional, and inappropriate," which led to his firing as Music Director at the Catholic church, where he served for more than five years.

"What I can tell you about the conversation, is that from what I've read, is it's consistent with the other situations I'm aware of around the country -- that they say because of the public nature of your ministry, and the inconsistency of your life choices, that we are requiring your resignation," Templeton told GoLocalProv.com on Tuesday.

"My heart breaks because this brings to light what 'safe' means to people. I feel this action represented more than me in my role. It represents people who have been marginalized and thought of as 'less than' for a whole host of reasons," said Templeton. "I came to St. Mary's for what it is and who they welcome, whether they come from reformed lives of addiction, or come from divorce and are remarried, whatever the reason.  I want to be clear -- I did not resign, I was relieved of my duties."
