BREAKING: 2 Democratic Minnesota Legislators Shot, One Fatally; Suspect at Large

 

Two Minnesota Democratic lawmakers were shot early Saturday, one of them fatally, by a gunman impersonating a police officer, according to law enforcement officials.

State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded; the gunman reportedly impersonated a police officer.

Hortman served as Minnesota Speaker of the House from 2019 until 2025.

In addition, Minnesota State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were also shot by the same individual, said Governor Tiim Walz. They have undergone surgery and are alive.

Police are searching for the suspect, who was dressed in police gear and driving what appeared to be a police car equipped with sirens when he was first spotted by law enforcement, officials said. 

Hortman and her husband were fatally shot in Brooklyn Park, Walz said Saturday.

MRP News reported at 11:00 AM, "Brooklyn Park police issued a shelter-in-place order Saturday morning as authorities searched for the suspect. The shelter-in-place order is for a 3-mile radius from Edinburgh USA golf course in Brooklyn Park. The golf course is located just south of the State Highway 610 freeway, and west of State Highway 252."
