Hours after GoLocal reported the shooting, the Rhode Island State Police issued a statement:

On Monday, January 22, 2024, at approximately 8:30AM, a firearm discharge involving an on-duty Deputy Sheriff occurred in the sally-port area on the grounds of the Adult Correctional Institute (ACI) Intake Services Facility in the City of Cranston. The discharge resulted in a non-life-threatening injury to another Deputy Sheriff who was in the immediate area at the time of the discharge. The injured Deputy Sheriff was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by rescue.
There were no ACI detainees or ACI employees involved or present when the discharge occurred. The two Deputy Sheriffs are members of the Department’s Inmate Control and Custody Transportation Unit, responsible for the transportation of ACI detainees to and from Rhode Island courts. An initial review of the incident appears that the firearm discharge was accidental. However, the incident is being investigated by the Rhode Island State Police Detective Bureau and the investigation is on-going at this time.

It took place at the Anthony P. Travisono Intake Service Center (ISC), which is a maximum security facility that serves as Rhode Island’s jail for male offenders.

Inmates housed at the ISC fall into several categories: pretrial detainees, newly sentenced inmates who are awaiting classification to other facilities, and sentenced to protective custody.

The ISC has a total inmate bed capacity of 1,148. According to the state, the length of time an inmate remains housed awaiting trial status at the ISC is approximately 27 days; this translates into a constant turnover of the inmate population. The facility processes approximately 706 commitments per month, according to the Department of Corrections.
